FDA, Bronners, and Coconut Oil

The FDA tells Dr Bronners to stop writing the health benefits of coconut oil on the side of their product?!

I quote from the Dead Pirate Society Anthem.

We do it for the ones standing up in the face of adversity

For those breaking the rules paid for by corporate conspiracy

and

Beware of corporate interests selling things rotten

Act NOW, so human goodwill is not so soon forgotten!

Derrotero and Rutters

I couldn't find a picture of this Derrotero anywhere other than "The Illustrated Pirate Diaries" by Alexander Exquemelin.  "A remarkable eyewitness account of Captain Morgan and the Buccaneers."

The Derrotero was an earlier Spanish version of what became the English Rutter, a mariner's handbook of sailing directions.  Captain and Krewe were under orders to toss weighted Rutters overboard should they come under attack.  These priceless records of coastlines were passed down from generation to generation.

Ports and landmarks were written on the wheel in the order a sailing ship would come across them.  More than one coast line could be recorded on a single Derrotero.

It looks like a wheel of chance from the boardwalk to me.

Rutter Stew - Dead Reckoning

We are working out a game for the Dead Pirate Society and the Pirate Fiesta.

We like the looks of the Dread Pirate game, but have yet to play it.

Breathing Life into the Dead Pirates Society

The treasure chest had been closed for a very long time.  Notice the Dead Pirate Society skull set atop the chest for pledging to the Dead Pirate Society.  Our most famous member, Robin Williams honored picture sits temporarily in the window frame in the background.

I quote from the Dead Pirate Society anthem:

The Dead Pirates Society honors unique heroes in person and absentia
We do it over drinks, dinner, and adventure
We do it for men, women, the youthful and old
In memoriam, we do it for those gone cold

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow - A Psalm of Life

What the Heart of the Young Man Said to the Psalmist
TELL me not, in mournful numbers,
  Life is but an empty dream!—
For the soul is dead that slumbers,
  And things are not what they seem.

Life is real! Life is earnest!
  And the grave is not its goal;
Dust thou art, to dust returnest,
  Was not spoken of the soul.

Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,
  Is our destined end or way;
But to act, that each to-morrow
  Find us farther than to-day.

Art is long, and Time is fleeting,
  And our hearts, though stout and brave,
Still, like muffled drums, are beating
  Funeral marches to the grave.

In the world's broad field of battle,
  In the bivouac of Life,
Be not like dumb, driven cattle!
  Be a hero in the strife!

Trust no Future, howe'er pleasant!
  Let the dead Past bury its dead!
Act,—act in the living Present!
  Heart within, and God o'erhead!

Lives of great men all remind us
  We can make our lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us
  Footprints on the sands of time;

Footprints, that perhaps another,
  Sailing o'er life's solemn main,
A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,
  Seeing, shall take heart again.

Let us, then, be up and doing,
  With a heart for any fate;
Still achieving, still pursuing,
  Learn to labor and to wait.

Dice Cuff Links

As the Dead Pirate Society awakens from it's deadly slumber, the body parts come to life.

Notice the 20 sided die set upon the canvas sleeve.

These dice were sold back in 2012.

 Harvey Makin dice cufflinks are still available.

Dead Pirates and Antique Phonographs

At the recent Shanghai Mermaid event, The Dead Pirate Society loves DJ Mac and his antique phonographs. In this pic Dead Pirate Vanessa of Vanessence Hair Salon stands on the left.  DJ Mac's postcard says "Antique Phonograph DJ Mac brings Sophisticated and Culturally Stimulating Musical Entertainment to your next event.  Featuring two period disc gramophones spinning 78's circa 1900-1929."

Notice the delicacy of the pavillon, that is the horn that amplifies the sound.  I think of them as delicate shells too.

We can't wait for the next event.  Check out http://michaelcumella.com/

The Traverse Board

The traverse board looks a lot to me like a pachinko game, or maybe even Chinese checkers.  I can also imagine Lilly Tomlin sitting at the telephone switchboard doling out little ditties.

The traverse board is used to keep track of changes in a vessel's speed or course over the period of a four-hour watch. At the end of each watch, the courses and speeds are added together, with the help of traverse tables, or by estimation, and marked in the logbook or on a chalkboard. A peg is put into a hole every half hour for the course steered, and another is inserted to reflect the approximate speed sailed. The traverse board, though used some in the sixteenth century, was more common in the seventeenth century.
