Dead Reckoning

The problem with navigating around Burning Man is that most people use landmark navigation and dead reckoning to know their way around their own neighborhood.  Most neighborhoods or cities are laid out on a kind of angular matrix grid system.  The streets of Burning Man are laid out like a clock, all streets radiating from the center point which just so happens to be 'The Man'.  Add to this that what we may think is a fixed landmark can turn out to be a lit up art car, which can really throw off orientation.  For a person determined to get it right, to do it all on their own, they can literally end up spending the night trying to get home.

dead reckoning
the process of calculating one's position, especially at sea, by estimating the direction and distance traveled rather than by using landmarks, astronomical observations, or electronic navigation methods.
